Captain Amber Hocking
Amber started sailing in her early teens, living on a sailboat with her father for a year and exploring the inside passage and completing a circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. She fell in love with the freedom, closeness to nature and the thrill of harnessing the wind.
In 2018 Amber found, bought and restored her father’s old sailboat to working order, and moved to California to pursue her dream of living aboard. She joined the racing community, completed a Pacific crossing with her father, and participated in R2AK.
She moved to Port Townsend in 2020 accepting a job at the Northwest Maritime Center as Bosun. While working there she became involved in their sailing programs for youths and adults, earned her 50 Ton USCG Mariners Credential, and became a US Sailing certified keelboat instructor. She skippers races on her boat “Hanuman” with her dog Neko serving as stern watch and welcomes both new and experienced racers to her crew.
Amber has since earned her 201, 203 and 204 instructor certifications through ASA and has been teaching 101 and 103 through Sail Port Townsend. She recently Joined the SSC as an instructor and is excited to bring her passion for sailing to the welcoming community of Seattle!
