Captain Sarah Hamel
Sarah’s path to becoming a sailing instructor is grounded in a lifelong connection to the water and a strong sense of adventure. After moving to the Pacific Northwest she discovered a passion for sailing that quickly took hold. Eager to explore Puget Sound and beyond, Sarah purchased a 35 ft sailboat before even knowing how to sail, then fully immersed herself in the learning process.
Committed to building real-world experience, Sarah has crewed on multiple offshore passages and sailed extensively throughout the Pacific Northwest, reaching as far north as Old Massett in Haida Gwaii.
In 2024, she was named Tacoma Women’s Sailing Association (TWSA) Sailor of the Year and earned her USCG 25-ton Master’s License with Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement. She is an active racer in both Tacoma and Seattle and also enjoys warm-water cruising in destinations like the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.
In March 2026, Sarah earned her ASA instructor certifications to teach 101, 102, 103, 104, and 118, and began teaching with SSC in May.
Sarah is especially passionate about helping others gain confidence, develop skills, and experience the freedom and joy of sailing.
