COVID-19 UPDATES & NEW PROTOCOLS

Captain Phil Johnson

Phil began sailing in the early 2000’s on the Columbia River in Portland, OR. Since that time he has owned a number of boats ranging from 24’ – 38’, and currently is in a partnership with a Dufour 38 Classic. Phil hails from south Louisiana, spent some time in Portland, OR, and has called Seattle his home since 2018.

Phil has cruised on the Columbia River, and in the Caribbean, the Sea of Cortez, the San Juan Islands, and the Gulf Islands. In 2022 he had the incredible experience of sailing from Honolulu to Port Angeles!

A former Seattle Sailing Club member, Phil earned his USCG Masters license and began teaching lessons  here at the Club in 2022. He is certified to teach ASA 101, 103, and 104 and developed training material for our San Juan Island Navigation seminar.

Phil enjoys being on the water and being part of the amazing experience of students learning how to sail. Phil loves the enthusiasm of students and the fact that they show up 12 months out of the year to learn how to sail! His primary goal is to help students become confident sailors and to manage risk to ensure their sailing adventures are safe and fun!

Phil was a great instructor who led us through ASA 101 with confidence and ease. He did a great job balancing the needs of each student and making sure we all had good experiences in the various roles on the boat. He was calm and gave clear instructions, even in higher stress moments of high wind. We felt like we were in good hands! G.H., ASA 101
