COVID-19 UPDATES & NEW PROTOCOLS

Captain Ruddy Mirkin Rattner

Captain Ruddy’s sailing journey began in the Mediterranean as a cadet for Marine studies at a Navy Officers Academy when he was 13 years old. He started teaching the younger generation at the Academy when he turned 15. He then went on to coach racing for sailing clubs and universities, captained privately owned yachts, taught school and summer sailing programs, and served as second in command on a navy ship. He has worked as a sailing instructor for many years which has afforded him the experience of teaching people of many different backgrounds and ages, from beginner-level students to veteran sailors, both practical and  theoretical courses.

Ruddy joined Seattle Sailing Club in 2022, carrying with him 17 years of maritime and teaching experience. He holds a 100-ton USCG Master’s license, and a comprehensive portfolio of certifications (including ASA 201, 203, 204, 205 & 218), as well as licenses from the RYA, IYT, among others.

Dedicated to a life centered around sailing, teaching, and creating positive experiences, Ruddy continuously strives to learn and grow as a teacher. “I first encountered sailing at the age of 13, and it was an instant connection; the tranquility and freedom of it kept me captivated, and still does. Sailing is my life’s passion. I believe in tailoring the way I teach to the specific needs of each student. Introducing students to this new world, or deepening their knowledge and passion for it, has been my privilege.” – Ruddy

Ruddy did a great job teaching! He was very thorough, collaborative, communicative and supportive. I learned a lot! D.B., ASA 105
