Captain Bill Rall
Bill retired from the US Coast Guard in 2011 where he spent over 30 years on or near the sea. Of his many tours of duty, his favorite shore job was teaching at the CG Academy in New London, Connecticut, where his summer duty included offshore sailing and racing with cadets. Sailing has always been his pastime, having been stationed in New England, Virginia, Monterey, Honolulu, many years in Alameda and three tours here in Seattle. Bill is now settled here in the NW, and is the Port Captain at the University of Washington School of Oceanography, overseeing the operations of their research vessels. He is a life long learner, and is passionate about helping others learn to sail and work as a team. His philosophy is “if you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right!”
Bill is a great sailing instructor! He’s friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable from his time with the USCG. Bill’s instruction through ASA104 improved my communication, navigation, docking, and sailing skills — definitely the best sailing class I’ve taken so far! Taking the class over 3-4 days really gave us time to focus on our weak spots, ask lots of questions, and to practice tricky skills like docking & MOB rescue. After taking ASA104, I feel much more confident in my ability to skipper larger boats for overnight trips. N.A., ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering
